The 2026 digital reset starts with a closer look at security updates and passwords as the new year gets underway. This article focuses on the practical steps behind staying current, protecting accounts, and understanding why routine digital maintenance matters more than ever.

As we move into 2026, many of us have already set our New Year’s resolutions – healthier habits, less screen time, more balance. All great goals.

G2 Computers, we’d like to suggest one more: a few simple digital safety habits that help protect your devices, your data, and your peace of mind. In a series of four short articles, we’ll share practical, low-effort steps to reduce everyday digital risk and avoid the most common issues we see – both at home and at work. If you missed the first piece in the series, it was about the importance of backups.

If you’re already doing all of this, you’re in great shape. If not, this series is an easy way to start the year with smarter, calmer digital habits that pay off all year long.

Install Security Updates (and Let Them Work for You)

Security updates are one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your devices protected – and for many people, they’re already happening automatically in the background. If you have automatic updates turned on, you’re doing exactly what we recommend.

Behind the scenes, Apple’s updates quietly fix dozens of security vulnerabilities at a time, many of which are never widely publicized because they’re highly technical. Occasionally, an update may cause a temporary issue, which is why some people prefer to wait a day or two before installing manually. When problems do occur, Apple typically pulls the update quickly and releases a corrected version.

Whether you rely on automatic updates or install them yourself, the key is staying reasonably current. Keeping your devices up to date is one of the easiest ways to reduce digital risk without having to think about it.

Use a Password Manager

Passwords aren’t going away overnight, even as passkeys slowly roll out. Until then, a password manager is essential.

Modern password managers (like Apple’s built-in Passwords or 1Password) do six important things:

  • Generate strong, unique passwords
  • Store them securely
  • Fill them in automatically
  • Flag reused or compromised passwords
  • Sync across all your devices
  • Store and generate two-factor authentication codes

For families, password sharing is an added bonus — couples can share household accounts, and parents can share specific logins with teens without exposing everything.

If you’re still typing passwords manually or keeping them in a document, this one change alone will dramatically improve your security.

If you’d like an added layer of protection, G2 Computers is happy to help. We can install Malwarebytes to protect against malware and unwanted software, and for those who want ongoing oversight, we also offer Watchman Monitoring – a professional monitoring service that quietly watches for security issues, failed backups, and system problems in the background.

It’s there when you want it, and unobtrusive when you don’t.
