Here’s a tip I found myself using a lot over the holidays, especially while making surprise gift lists and then conducting the inevitable online hunt for them.

It’s a simple one. Almost embarrassingly simple. And yet so efficient that I’m mildly annoyed I didn’t use it sooner.

The trick:

Option-click a different app in the Dock.

When you Option-click from one app (say, Word or Safari) to another (like Mail), the original app instantly hides itself. No Mission Control. No window shuffling. Just gone.

It works with the Finder (Desktop) too.

I love it for the simplicity.

I loved it even more for the efficiency and speed.

And yes, I got exactly the discretion I needed.

Every time my husband wandered over to ask if I wanted coffee, or needed help finding a document, I appeared to be calmly reading my email. 😇

(Yes. He loved his gift.)
