I was listening to a podcast, Stuff You Should Know. This show has been a staple of my listening habits for probably 10 years now. Recently they talked about how putting lights on Christmas Trees started. It’s nothing spectacular. Pretty much a dude who worked with Edison who had access to the items needed came up with the idea. He threw about 60 on a tree in his New York home. The neighbors talked about it. The next year he did more lights and a few years later it took off with the rich folk. It was sometime in the ’30s when the prices started dropping and the idea really took off.

I know this is not really that interesting, but here comes that part. Apparently, maybe I missed this day in school, people used to put candles in their Christmas trees. Can you imagine that? Were these people burning down whole neighborhoods pre 1930? I just can’t think of a worse idea than putting a flame on a Christmas tree. Have you ever seen one of those burn? I almost want to start researching house fires pre-1930. Maybe that cow didn’t start the Chicago fire. Poor girl has always been blamed for burning a city down when in all actuality it was some guy putting candles in a tree. He was so embarrassed when he realized it was a stupid idea he blamed the first thing he could think of.

“Do I know what happened Officer? I dunno, wow, geez, this is just terrible, can’t believe the whole city is on fire. Such a shame. Tragedy. Oh, look over there… Betsy. That cow is always causing some mischief. I bet she kicked over the lantern.”

Anyway, Happy Holidays from all of us at G2 and keep your cows away from your lanterns 🙂
