Xserve
More power. Less energy.
Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processors.
The new Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” processors deliver outstanding performance through an enhanced microarchitecture, integrated memory controller, and two new features: Turbo Boost, which dynamically speeds up the cores in use when others aren’t needed; and Hyper-Threading, which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each processor core.
Next-generation server architecture.
Each Xeon processor provides three channels of fast 1066MHz DDR3 ECC RAM for up to a 2.4x improvement in memory bandwidth and 40 percent reduction in latency compared with the previous generation.2 Xserve includes up to 12 DIMM slots for greater memory expansion using lower-capacity modules. And two x16 PCI Express 2.0 slots deliver massive bandwidth for expansion cards.
Fast, powerful hardware RAID option.
The optional Xserve RAID Card offers blazing performance of up to 497MB/s without taking up a PCI Express slot.3 It features 512MB of RAID cache, a 72-hour cache battery backup for rigorous data protection, and hardware RAID levels 0, 1, and 5.
Internal graphics.
Xserve includes a built-in NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 graphics card with 256MB of GDDR3 memory and Mini DisplayPort output, so it’s easy to manage your server using a keyboard, mouse, and display. The 2D/3D acceleration of the GPU enhances rendering and video processing for server-side tools like Podcast Producer. And an optional VGA adapter supports connection to standard VGA devices and KVM (keyboard-video-mouse) switches.
Solid-state drive option.
Add the 128GB solid-state drive to your Xserve for an ultrafast boot drive that doesn’t take up a drive bay. The solid-state drive uses less than 1 watt of power — compared to 12-18 watts for a typical spinning disk — and provides up to 20x faster random-access seek time than a 15,000-rpm SAS drive.
Improved energy efficiency.
Xserve works hand in hand with Mac OS X Server to maximize energy efficiency. For example, the new CPU architecture puts processor cores into lower-power modes when they’re inactive. The active cooling system intelligently manages fan speeds. The high-efficiency power supply (89% average) makes the most of its energy use. The result is a system that reduces idle power consumption by 19 percent and delivers 89 percent better performance per watt than the previous-generation Xserve.4
Unlimited-client Leopard Server.
Xserve ships with Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard, which supports an unlimited number of Mac, Windows, Linux, and UNIX clients. Powerful client management services and new Leopard Server features make Xserve the ultimate server for Mac and mixed-platform workgroups.
Up to 3TB in a 1U package.
Configure your Xserve with up to 3TB of storage in three drive bays using SATA Apple Drive Modules.1 Xserve also supports 15,000-rpm SAS drive modules.
Lights-out management.
Control your Xserve without ever trekking to the server rack. Power it on or off, reboot, monitor, and more from a remote Mac — no extra hardware or software required. And Bonjour support makes discovering and connecting to your Xserve even easier.
